This did not start in a lab. It started with the ordinary problem of seeing the same horse every day and having nothing but memory to say whether it still moves the way it did last year.
A good horseman can tell you a great deal from watching a horse walk away and back. What nobody can do is hold last autumn in their head accurately enough to set it against this one. You see your own horse every day, and that is exactly why you are the last person likely to notice it changing.
A vet has the opposite problem. The eye is the instrument, and the eye works on one day, in one place, on one surface, with whatever the owner can remember of the visit before. A second record, taken the same way every time, is not a cleverer opinion than the vet’s. It is simply something that was written down.
StrideVision is not an attempt to replace either of those eyes. It is an attempt to give them a record: the same walk, measured the same way every time, in units that mean something, kept so it can be looked at again.
It has a sibling. EquiRay is our radiograph workbench for veterinarians — it assembles the study, checks each view for quality, names the views that are missing, and keeps the vet’s own written report with the horse. It does not read films for pathology, and every finding in it was made by a veterinarian. Movement from one, structure from the other, both on the same horse and both recorded rather than remembered: that pairing is the whole idea, and it is why we are building two things instead of one.
The horses we are building for are the ones already in your care, all year. Somebody will point a phone at a horse they are thinking of buying, and that is a perfectly good use of it, but it is a setting rather than a market. What we are interested in is the horse you will still have in five years.
We are deliberately slow about what we claim. There is no validation study yet, so there is no accuracy figure on this site, and there will not be one until a study exists with its protocol written before anybody sees the data. The software cannot yet compare one side of a horse with the other, and the limits page says so plainly instead of leaving you to work it out. Where it cannot support a number it says so. That is a choice, it costs us on a page like this one, and we would rather pay it.
For vets, and for everyone who keeps a horse
One horse in a paddock is as much the customer as a practice with a list of clients. Movement is half the picture; the radiographs are the other half, and StrideVision is built to sit beside EquiRay so a horse can be described by both rather than remembered by neither.
Horse owners
You see your horse every day, and that is exactly why you cannot see it change. Movement drifts slowly. A read taken the same way each season gives you something to hold this spring's horse against last spring's, instead of a memory of something that looked a bit off on Tuesday.
Veterinarians
The eye is the instrument, and the eye works on one day, in one place, on one surface. This is a second record, taken the same way every time, that you can set beside your own examination months later without relying on anyone's memory of the last visit.
With EquiRay
EquiRay is our radiograph workbench for vets. It assembles the study, names the views that are missing, and carries the vet's own written findings with the horse. StrideVision measures how the horse moves; EquiRay organises what the vet sees in the films.
Neither product looks at a horse and tells you what is wrong with it. EquiRay does not read films for pathology; every finding in it comes from a veterinarian. Together they give the fuller picture, movement and structure, both recorded rather than remembered.
